Highlight of the week a swordfish!

Week Ending June 10, 2022

Like the song says, “June is busting out all over” and no place more than in our front yard, the Sea of Cortez.

Buena Vista Hotel catches in the past week or so include marlin, wahoo, dorado, roosterfish, and tuna, but the highlight was a swordfish. [See swordfish story below.]

With air temps in the mid-80s, a bit of humidity and a cool breeze in the afternoon, combined with water temps in the high 70s, fish seem to find their place closer to shore.

Bait situation is returning to normal: sardines, mackerel, caballito and ballyhoo. Porpoise have been found in the 30- to 42-mile range, but sometimes we get lucky and find them at nearby El Rincon. Besides great fishing, there are beautiful sights with mantas jumping, hammerhead sharks, turtles, and leaping marlin.

On May 28, while fishing the El Cardonal Tournament, Team Dottie BII, with Capt. Vicente Cosio and his crew landed a 200-plus pound swordfish. Eliseldo Silva, Arturo Fuentes, Marco Garcia and Capt. Cosio had the time of their lives. Unfortunately for the anglers, swordfish were not on the fish list that counted during the tourney . . . Very good job guys.

Inshore fishing was outstanding for Mike Paddock and Phil Sumner from Auburn, Wash. While trolling Rapalas, the guys got two wahoo and three dorado . . . not bad to begin their fishing trip aboard Valentina with Capt. and friend Valentin Castro.

Kil Song from rod manufacturer/importer Black Hole USA and Yusuke Dodo visited longtime friend Capt. Felipe Valdez and went fishing aboard Cabo Marlini. He landed a 50-plus pound roosterfish that was safely released while testing his new 6-foot, 8-inch Black Hole Kayak Special rod and matching reel out of Cabo San Lucas. Then, they returned Buena Vista to fish with Capt. Valdez, where Yusuke Dodo cast to and landed a very large jack crevalle. What a great fighter! It is little wonder they’re called Toro.

Christopher Vecsey and cousin Sean visited us from Alabama and Florida having a hell of a great time fishing with longtime friends Capt. Felipe Valdez and Juan Lucero. They landed roosterfish and dorado while big game fly-fishing . . . Congrats, friends.
