The East Cape Sportfishing Club is hosting its first International Sportfishing Tournament, presented by Corona and Cabo Rivera on Saturday September 1. The Club is a non-profit organization, created to promote sportfishing within the region, based on principles and sustainable models. It is also the only Club in Baja Sur that’s a member of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). The newly formed Club already has two events under its belt this year; the first annual Sierra Tournament held Sunday, Feb. 19 and the hugely successful first annual Children’s Day Tournament (Yellowtail Tournament) held on April 29.
Next up, is their inaugural International Sportfishing Tournament, presented by Corona and Cabo Rivera on Saturday September 1. This is the last event of the season open to the public. *Friday, August 31–Opening ceremony, sign ups and Captain’s Meeting at Vago’s Bar on the beach across from the old Pemex from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. “We’ll have music, Corona Girls, the Captain’s Meeting and for the ceremony, local authorities will join us,” founding member and president, Felipe Valdez said.
*Saturday Sept. 1–Shotgun start at 7 a.m. Weight station will be open from noon until 6 p.m. There will be lots of Corona Girls at the weight station, live music by Banda La Grande from Mazatlan from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and free food for everyone from the fish being caught, as soon as they start weighing in fish. The Awards Ceremony will start 8 p.m. but the party will go all night.
The entry fee is $5000 pesos or $420 usd per team, with up to six onboard including the crew. Jackpots are $3000, $2000 and $1000 pesos for marlin, and dorado and tuna will be $3000 pesos each. Guaranteed prizes include $100,000 pesos for the first place marlin, with $30,000 pesos and $20,000 pesos for second and third place. The biggest dorado and tuna get $25,000 pesos each.
